What Murray is Helping Prove to the Rest of Basketball

This is finally the year when "mid-majors" or smaller programs, are proving themselves worthy of playing in the Big Dance. Of the teams left in the Sweet 16, #9 UNI, #5 Butler #6 Xavier #10 St. Mary's #11 Washington and #12 Cornell are still in the mix.

Still, I think not all skeptics are convinced smaller basketball programs are legit. Many think it was fluke that this year they won. That the bigger, mightier teams just ran out of time. And many are saying upsets are fun in the first and second rounds, but the big boys should be left to handle it the rest of the way. I just got done reading an article on cbs.com that really made me mad.

We like upsets early but want powers there in the end.

For instance, there was nothing more awesome than watching Northern Iowa outwork Kansas, nothing more fun than watching Ali Farokhmanesh pull up and bury that open 3-pointer in the final seconds for the win. Great moment, great game, great story that'll stick with us forever. But doesn't it kind of stink that Kansas is no longer around? The Jayhawks are still one of the nation's best teams with a star point guard and future Hall of Fame coach. They were nearly the unanimous No. 1 in the preseason and unanimous No. 1 after the regular season, and the Final Four will be missing something because it's missing them.

We like Greatness vs. Greatness or Cinderella vs. Greatness. What we do not like is Cinderella vs. Pretty Goodness. And we don't like Cinderella vs. Cinderella, either. That's called BracketBusters.

Ouch. That last line hurt. Just because these smaller schools like Northern Iowa or Murray, who has about a third of the enrollment than Kentucky, may not have the same amount money or noteriety, you are telling me aren't equipped to play with teams in the power conferences, and don't deserve to be there? I don't miss Kansas because I want to see teams that are hot right now. Unless its my team, name doesn't so much matter.

What it comes down to is athleticism and the will to win, and if you have this on your team, you can compete with anyone no matter your college size or the ability to make money for your school. To make a Division 1 college athletic team you have to be an elite athlete. To make it into the tournament you have to be playing at the top of your game. And I don't care who you are, if you've got athletic players and a coach that utilizes its players into a winning system, any team can beat any team on any given day.

Now I know this isn't true for all schools. Some should hold that "mid-major" status proud. But Murray has helped show that a balanced offense with plenty of sharp shooters that can hit a jumper when it counts can help your team win games. And UNI is showing if you've got huge guys like Jordan Eglseder and Adam Koch on the inside using sheer athleticism and strength to win the ball in the paint you can beat a Cole Aldrich maybe doesn't always live up to the hype.

I'm proud that our OVC school, Murray State, can call itself one of the schools paving the way for teams not in BCS conferences to make a statement in college basketball.

Our conference staff was so excited when Danero Thomas hit that game winning shot to beat Vandy, one of the best teams in the SEC. Because it's not every year we have a team this good. We don't expect to have 5 teams from our conference in the tournament like some of the bigger conferences may. You should have seen us jumping around after that shot sank at the buzzer like we just won the national championship. Why? Because Murray is putting the OVC and small schools on the map. And I hope the teams left in the tourney continue where Murray left off.

What the World is Saying About Murray State

Did you enjoy Murray State's win over Vanderbilt on Thursday? It was a nice way to kick off March Madness and gave the OVC a nice little boost.

The league won a game last year (the Opening Round game) and while it does count as a victory in the NCAA Tournament (and brought an extra "unit" of revenue to the league) it was not the marquee victory the league had been searching for since Middle Tennessee State won in 1989.

In fact the league had 3 straight marquee wins at the end of the 1980s, as Austin Peay beat Illinois in 1987 (the famous Dick Vitale "I will stand on my head" game), Murray State topped N.C. State in 1988 (the Racers only other NCAA win before yesterday; a game later in the tournament they barely lost to Danny Manning's Kansas team that would go on to win it all) and MTSU beat Florida State in 1989. But no OVC team had advanced to the 2nd round until this year.

Thanks to Danero Thomas' big shot, the Racers made a national splash and will look to back the Sweet 16 when they take on Butler on Saturday afternoon.

Below are a few of the articles about the Racers win over the Commodores. Included is a article from the Nashville Tennessean who chose not to run an article after Murray State won the OVC Championship in the city on March 6 ... my thought is they are probably paying a little bit more attention to the Racers and the OVC now!

Austin Peay Goin Dancin' in Knoxville

The women's NCAA bracket was announced last night and our OVC automatic bid, Austin Peay is set to face Tennessee Saturday at 11:16 on ESPN2. Austin Peay was seeded in the #16 hole while Tennessee is the #1 seed in the Memphis Region. The winner of the game will go on to face the winner of the Dayton/TCU matchup.

The Lady Govs upset top-seeded Eastern Illinois, 69-60, to win its second straight OVC tournament title. It marked the second year in a row that APSU had defeated EIU in the tourney final.

Austin Peay heads into the tournament with a 11-7, 15-17 record. Last year they were seeded 16th as well and faced #1 seeded Duke.

Negatives: The girls are playing #1 Tennessee. It's going to be a tough matchup as Tennessee has been ranked in the top 5 most of the season and carries a 25-8, 11-5 record heading into the postseason.

Positives: Austin Peay is carrying the momentum of winning its second straight OVC championship, and will be a little more familiar with the pressures of the NCAA tournament. The team also gets to play in Knoxville, Tenn., just a few hours from their home in Clarksville, Tenn., so hopefully the large fan base that came to Nashville for the OVC tournament can fill the stands red in Knoxville as well. And, the game is on ESPN2 so that will be some extra motivation for the team to put on a good show as well.

It was clear from the post-game press conference after the championship game the girls were pumped up and excited for the challenge that lie ahead of them, and the way they fought in the championship game, it is clear they won't back down from the Lady Vols without a fight.

Ashley Herring leads the team in scoring with 14.8 points and Nicole Jamen and Jasmine Rayner have a combined 21 points and 16 rebounds, so let's hope the three can keep the Lady Govs in the game and hang with Tennessee as long as they can.

So, bring it on Tennessee, and good luck Lady Govs!

Go West Young Man!

The 2010 College Basketball National Championship Brackets came out today and the Murray State Racers are slated as the 13th seeded in the West Region (Salt Lake City). Their first round game will take place Thursday in San Jose at HP Pavilion against 4th seeded Vanderbilt. Game time has yet to be determined but will be available on the all-seeing eye that is cbs.

The winner of the of the Murray, Vandy game will take on the winner of the 12th seeded UTEP vs 5th seeded Butler contest.

All things being equal, I actually think Murray has a great shot and making a special run. They say tourney time is all about match ups and the Racers match up well with Vanderbilt. If they can get past them, its another bracket buster weekend with a (i hate the term) "mid major" vs "mid major" and if Murray State has shown anything this year its that it is clearly one of the best (again with the term....) mid major programs in the country.

We'll see how it all shakes out this Thursday in San Jose. Check back with us Wednesday as OVC Insider will highlight the first round match up!

Lady Govs Regaining Post Season Dominanance (The Leaf Chronicle)

Found a nice article from The Leaf Chronicle's James D. Horne about how the Austin Peay women's basketball team has excelled in the past decade in large part to coach Carrie Daniels who created a name for herself after winning Peay's first championship in the 95-96 season.

Peay will play in the women's NCAA tournament after winning the OVC tournament last weekend. ESPN Bracketology has them right now as the 16 seed playing UConn. Below is the article:

At the beginning of this decade, Austin Peay ruled the roost in the OVC, winning four straight tournament championships while earning the automatic trips to the NCAA Tournament.

The Lady Govs' recent run to their second consecutive title at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena in a 69-60 victory over Eastern Illinois last Saturday not only gave the program a seventh championship, it assured their status as the team of the decade.

It was an echo to the past and the first championship the Lady Govs won under then senior guard Carrie Daniels, now head coach, after the 1995-96 season.

"I'm sitting here and it's almost not real to me," Daniels said. "I know it just happened, but no one thought we'd be sitting here again after the way our season went. I always believed in this team and I always knew the talent we had.

"We didn't always perform the best throughout the season, but I never gave up on them. Every night I went home and tossed and turned in bed and tried to find ways to motivate them and try to find ways to get it out of them.

"... It means so much to me to see them experience what I did as a player."

Daniels won her two titles faster than any other coach in Lady Govs' history.

Austin Peay reached the pinnacle as a third seed this year after taking it all as a fifth seed last season. The first two Lady Govs teams that won titles this decade in 2001 and 2002 did so as a third and fourth seed before winning the regular season and tournaments the next two seasons.

Austin Peay will find out where it will play during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Monday at 6 p.m. (ESPN, Charter Cable Ch. 35).

"But as a coach, I know what it feels like and what they're going through and it's so special," Daniels said. "To know I'm on the sideline helping guide them, there's nothing like it, and I wouldn't trade anything for it in the world.

"Regardless of how the season went, or how many times I went home frustrated, they mean the world to me and I love them with all my heart."

Murray's Kennedy joins elite class with OVC tournament win

Last weekend Murray State coach Billy Kennedy led his team to the NCAA basketball tournament after his Racers defeated Morehead State in the finals of the OVC tournament. He now joins an elite group of 38 college coaches who have taken two different teams to the big dance. He also did it at Southeastern Louisiana in 2005, his alma mater.

Murray has gone 17-1 this year, and 30-4 overall. The 30 wins this season at MSU is a school record. Kennedy's team also set the single-season victories record at SLU, winning 24, in 2005.

Kennedy's accomplishments have led him to be recognized as one of 15 finalists for the Durham Coach of the Year award, an award given by CollegeInsider.com to the best mid-major coach in the country.

Big props to all Kennedy has done for the Murray State program. Let's hope he can extend his team's momentum into the tournament this year.
